4 Upstate New York Hot Dog Stands Named Best in America

The Daily Meal recently compiled a list of the top 75 hot dog stands in America. Four of them are in Upstate New York.

Clare And Carl's - Plattsburgh

At number 63 is Clare and Carl's on US 9 in Plattsburgh. The roadside stand serves the North County's iconic Michigan hot dog, which features a chili sauce - a treat good enough to land Plattsburgh a spot on the Top 10 Food Cities in New York.

Famous Lunch - Troy

The Capitol District around Albany has some iconic hot dogs like Gus's, Newest Lunch and New Way Lunch (as /r/albany debated on National Hot Dog Day)  but it was Famous Lunch on Congress Street in Troy that grabbed The Daily Meal's #33 spot. Lots of menu items like burgers and fries, and of course the iconic 60 cent wieners can be topped with the shop's Zippy Sauce.

Schaller's Drive-In - Rochester

Schaller's Drive-In has three Rochester area locations, Irondequoit, Brighton and, pictured above, Greece. The Greece location is a classic lake-side restaurant located on the shores of Lake Ontario northwest of Rochester, near the Lake Ontario State Parkway, one of New York's Top 5 most scenic lakeside drives.

Ted's - Buffalo

Talk to a native Buffalonian and ask them about food, and you'd expect to hear about chicken wings. You might be told about Western New York's homegrown fast-food Mexican chain Mighty Taco. If you're lucky, you'll get tipped off to Ted's. The Buffalo area hot-dog chain is one of the top 10 hot dog joints in the county, according to the Daily Meal. Sure you can get the standard dog, but Ted's offers some non-standard combinations like topping the frank with macaroni and cheese, bacon and onion rings. The location above is located on Transit Road (NY Route 78) just north of Exit 49 making it an easy on/off from the New York State Thruway.

All of this begs the question, does the Utica-Rome area have a really great hot dog restaurant? Sure we have several seasonal ice cream stands that sling dogs all summer (Voss' in Yorkville comes to mind), but how about a restaurant dedicated solely to the humble hot dog?
