The US Mint saw sweeping success with its decade long run of state quarters.  The Gold Dollar coins featuring US Presidents are proving much less popular.  The US Mint has announced that they are halting production of the gold coins.  The coins had been produced by the US Mint locations in Philadelphia and Denver, and the Denver Post reports that

More than a billion, shiny one-dollar coins are going unused by the public and piling up in bank vaults across the country.

The Obama administration announced Tuesday that it would all but halt production of its special presidential dollar coins for general circulation

Apparently the US public had little interest in carrying James K. Polk and James Buchanan in their pockets and purses.
