Watch Senator Rand Paul Holding Filibuster in the Senate
Standing up to speak on the floor of the United States Senate to hold up a vote on an issue via a talking filibuster is a rare but time-honored tradition. Â And there is one happening right now by the junior senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul. Â Paul started his filibuster saying “I will speak until I can no longer speak.”
Paul began speaking just before Noon today (March 6) and is still speaking as of 7PM. Â His filibuster is holding up a vote on the nomination of CIA Director John Brennan.
A talking filibuster requires the senator to remain on the floor and speaking, yielding only for questions from other senators.
The most famous filibuster in history is, perhaps, the 24-hour session by Strom Thurmond of South Carolina who held up the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
