You may know him best as Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.  Watertown's Viggo Mortensen has most recently played a father who lives off the grid in "Captain Fantastic."  That role has earned him a best lead actor nomination at the Academy Awards.

The Watertown High School grad attended St. Lawrence University, and still owns a family farm near Watertown.  According to newyorkupstate.com, he plans to return to the northern New York community before the Oscars, to attend the Snowtown Film festival this weekend.

Mortensen was nominated in the same category in 2008, for his role in the movie "Eastern Promises," but lost to Daniel Day-Lewis.  This year, he's up against Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Ryan Gosling, and Andrew Garfield.

The Watertown Native has also appeared in "Witness," "Leatherface: The Texas chain Saw massacre,", "Crimson Tide," and a movie called "The Road."
