Say it isn't so! Wine in Central New York may not leave your taste buds dancing in the coming years.

Don't start panicking yet. Right now, wine is actually in a great spot, but it may not stay that way for long. The taste of wine relies on many variables, one of them being the grapes of course. The temperatures and whether it's a dry or rainy season will effect the outcome of the grapes - Warmer weather with a dry spell afterwards is the best for grape growing.

This is what is happening now. We have our warmer weather, and then dry conditions for the grapes to be harvested. After looking back at grape growing information from the past few hundred years, researchers have noticed that the time grapes get harvested is getting earlier. Right now that's not a bad thing, but it could impact wine in a bad way, in the near future.

The problem starts with not having that important 'dry spell' after the warmer weather moves in. According to IFL Science,

...temperatures in general are getting warmer, but they are now not necessarily followed by this dry period, and can now be shadowed instead by rain that has the reverse effect – decreasing a vintage's quality.

So what does this mean for Central New York? Like we said earlier, don't start panicking yet. Enjoy your wine (you don't have to start stocking up on bottles or anything), but realize as temperatures and weather changes, grape growers may have to start growing in more suitable areas.

Remember, we're living in the best time for wine in Central New York right now!
