Honestly, our area has some of the most exciting news to happen this year: Nano is finally happening. It's great news, but what in the world does it mean? What is the definition of nanotechnology?

I'm very proud and excited to be living in the Mohawk Valley. It's going to be one heck of an adventure coming our way with Nano coming to the Utica/Rome area. What in the world does it actually mean?

Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale. For those who don't know that means about 1 to 100 nanometers. What the heck is the size of a nanometer? 1 Nanometer equals 0.0000001 centimeters. It's pretty darn small right?

It’s hard to imagine just how small nanotechnology is. Here's a few things to compare it too:

- There are 25,400,000 nanometers in an inch

- A sheet of newspaper is about 100,000 nanometers thick

- On a comparative scale, if a marble were a nanometer, then one meter would be the size of the Earth."

Does that help?

Nanoscience and nanotechnology can be used across all sorts of science fields including: chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. We pretty much have the NASA of nanoscience coming to our area.
