What In The World Is The Difference Between Snow Flurries, Showers, Storms and Lake Effect??
March 16, 2013 1:20 PM I read weather every single day on the radio and it hit me just now, if I’m wondering what the difference is between snow flurries showers and storms, maybe you’re wondering too. So, I fired off a quick Google search and thanks to the glossary at Weather.com, I now feel like a mini-meterologist! Here’s what I found:
SNOW FLURRIES
This is the lightest of the snowfall varieties and usually doesn’t last very long and barely accumulates if at all… snow falls lightly and melts.
SNOW SHOWERS
These have less warning than flurries and easily accumulate do to it’s heavier nature, starting suddenly and ending as suddenly as they came, similar to the behavior of rain showers but the frozen cousin.
SNOW STORMS
This is the upgrade of showers and accompanied by steady strong winds, sometimes gusting and in that case it becomes a SNOW SQUALL.
Oh, One More… LAKE EFFECT SNOW!
This one’s a biggie for Central New York, basically this is when a cold dry air mass picks up moisture and heat from a nearby lake and dumps snow on us in select areas. It could be snow squalling in one place, and sunny skies just a few miles away. You just never know.
