A movie due out on August 13 called 'The Possession' is based on a true story of an allegedly possessed wine cabinet known as a dibbuk, or dybbuk, box.  But what is it and is it real?

Let's start with a dybbuk - a mystical creature from Jewish folklore.  The dybbuk is malevolent and is said to inhabit the souls of the dead.

The story behind the dibbuk box goes back to 2001 when the wooden box was purchased an a yard sale in Portland, Oregon.  The box has changed hands several times via eBay auction listings.

According to the dybbuk box Wikipedia listing, inside, the box

contained two 1920s pennies, a lock of blonde hair bound with cord, a lock of black/brown hair bound with cord, a small statue engraved with the Hebrew word "Shalom", a small, golden wine goblet, one dried rose bud, and a single candle holder with four octopus-shaped legs.

Numerous owners of the box have reported that strange phenomena accompany it. Mannis claimed that the box was responsible for a series of horrific nightmares shared with other people while they were in possession of the box. His mother is supposed to have suffered a stroke on the same day he gave her the box as a birthday present - October 31. Every owner of the Box has reported that smells of cat urine or jasmine flowers and nightmares involving an old hag accompany the Box.
