What is Waze?

Google opened their checkbook today and purchased an app called Waze. So what is Waze and why did Google spend $1.3 billion to purchase it?

Waze is an app that turns your daily commute into a game by keeping track of the miles you travel and converting those into points. But I'm selling it short to just say it's another entry in the gamification of apps.

Waze is a free GPS mapping and routing app.

Waze is also a crowd-sourced way to report and find out about traffic tie-ups and learn about alternative routes.
