How to Handle it when Your Brain Completely Checks Out
You know those days - you just can't seem to stay focused on anything. It's like having another Monday all over again. When your brain checks out, there's a few things you can do to try and get it back on track.
Every once in a while I have a day where I just can't get anything done. I'm actually suffering from it right now. I'm getting ready to go camping this weekend, so my brain is already checked out (which is rough because I still have a lot to get done this week). So what do you do when you can't focus? How do you get your brain to check back in?
Well, the best thing you can do is not force it. The harder you try to get focused, the more your brain wanders. Take a break from the day, and try one of these ideas.
That's right, stretch like you're warming up to exercise. Stretch everything - from your ankles and wrists, to your neck and hips. Take time with it, and try not to think about anything else, but the stretching your doing.
Get out all the different pens, markers, highlighters, whatever - and create your own work of art. Even taking a break from work and doodling for a few minutes will help you get back into the groove of things.
Especially if you sit at a desk all day, you got to get up and move around. Walk around the office or building, maybe stop and have a chat with some of your co-workers. If your brain has checked out, sitting at your desk staring off at nothing isn't going to do you any good.
Get Some Fresh Air
Go outside, even if it's just for a few minutes. Stand outside, soak up the sunshine (or watch the rain if the weather isn't cooperating). Look around outside. Don't think about the work you need to get done, just enjoy the fresh air for a little bit.
Watch a Funny Video
Or a cute animal video. All you need is something short, like a little distraction from being distracted. I happen to like this video I found on Facebook earlier.
Sometimes it's hard to stay focused, especially if you have a lot to get done. Hopefully by doing one of these ideas, you'll get a nice break and be ready to tackle the rest of your work day. Good Luck!
