Learn more of the history of the Erie Canal and the challenges that were faced when the project started, with this special documentary being hosted by CNY's own David Muir.

"Erie: The Canal That Made America" is a special documentary that will air on WCNY-TV. It's a one-hour documentary that spotlights the groundbreaking of the huge project, and how important it was to connect the nation. According to WCNY-TV,

Once the waters of the Great Lakes were wed with the Atlantic Ocean, the canal helped create what America now knows as the Empire State and propelled New York City into the role of America’s leading port and economic hub.

It's crazy to think about the disbursement of goods before the Erie Canal was around, and how difficult and time-consuming it would be. The Erie Canal changed the face of the United States. It brought the country one step closer to becoming an industrial giant. But the canal did so much more for the United States and even had impacts internationally. You'll learn all about that in this documentary.

The documentary is being hosted by David Muir of ABC's "World News Tonight" and co anchor of ABC's "20/20." If you didn't know, Muir is actually a graduate of Ithaca College and got his broadcasting start in Syracuse, before moving on to be the reporter/anchor he is today.

"Erie: The Canal That Made America" will air on WCNY-TV on Tuesday, September 12th at 8pm. You can get more info on the canal, this documentary, and see a trailer at: WCNY.org
