Summer in Central New York is too short. One minute, you're celebrating the last day of school and the next thing you know, pumpkin lattes are being served at Dunkin' Donuts.

In Central New York, the New York State Fair is always a good indicator of the close of summer, especially since it spans the end of August and the beginning of September.

For parents, the beginning of sports practice means summer is over and school is right around the corner. Whether it's Pop Warner football and cheerleading or modified and high school sports, it's the first step back towards the schedules and activities of the school year.

Here are some other CNY markers of summer's end:

  • Halloween decorations out in the stores
  • Back-to-school shopping
  • Teacher assignment letters
  • Closing of local ice cream stands
  • Advent of sweet corn at farm stands
  • Pumpkin everything at the coffee shop
  • When you finally change out the wreath on your door
  • Closing the pool or camp

Of course, in Central New York, it's possible that the most definitive sign that summer is over is when we see that first snowflake...but let's hope that doesn't happen too soon.

You know you're either the kind of person who can't wait for summer to end so you can get back into the regular routine, or you don't give up on the season until the temperature dips below 40 degrees. Which one are you?

What says "summer's over" to you?
