A groom on Reddit explained why he doesn't want to invite his estranged mother to his upcoming wedding.

"I am getting married next year to the love of my life, and we’re deep into planning. The problem is my mom. Growing up, she wasn’t really around for me. She missed a lot of my big moments—awards, sports events, even my graduation. She wasn’t a bad person; she just had other priorities like work and her social life, and I get that. But it still hurt as it left a dark void in my brain," the groom began.

He shared that ever since they started planning their wedding, his mother has reached out and is expecting to be involved in the process. However, he has conflicting feelings over this.

"I don’t feel like she earned the right to be there. My dad, stepmom, and friends have been the ones supporting me through everything. I don’t want her to just waltz back into my life for the big day when she wasn’t there for everything else," he shared.

"My fiancée says I should invite her because it would be cruel to exclude her. But I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t want to hurt her, but at the same time, I feel like she hurt me for years," the groom concluded.

Users in the comments section mostly sided with the groom.

"It’s your day and no one else gets to decide for you!" one person wrote.

"You're entitled to feel any way you like. But she's still your mother, even if she wasn't a very good one. If you don't want to hurt her, then stop being vindictive and invite her," someone else commented.

"It's your wedding day, and you have every right to surround yourself with people who've supported you. It's understandable that you feel hurt by your mother's past actions. However, if she's trying to make amends, it might be worth having a conversation about your feelings, even if it's tough. You don't have to decide right now. Take some time. Whatever you choose, it's about what makes you most comfortable on your big day," another shared.
