Strange lights over Lake Ontario are causing all sorts of confusion in Upstate New York.

These lights appeared over the lake on Tuesday May 23rd around dusk time. Officials from the Royal Canadian Air Force confirmed to WHAM out of Rochester that they were conducting training operations Tuesday night.

During those exercises, the Air Force said they may have caused the visual phenomenon. The U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday night it is investigating, but has not yet responded."

However, many aren't buying that story just yet. Many reports on social media report that the lights just hovered for a long period of time in one spot, before disappearing.

Lisa Gorman: We saw them in three separate formations from different directions. Defiantly not flares. Very far apart

Steven Tompkins: The flash of lights you saw was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

What do you think it was? Currently, the U.S. Coast Guard is investigating and has ruled out basic flares.
