It is a rare atmospheric phenomenon that only strikes a few times every winter season, thundersnow. And tonight the show was in Western New York around Buffalo during a major lake effect snowstorm.
The arctic blast and heavy snow caused by the polar vortex during the massive winter storm of January 2014 included a phenomenon known as thundersnow captured on the Tug Hill Plateau in Upstate New York.
A massive winter storm system is moving through the midsection of the country. The storm is also bringing the phenomenon known as thundersnow. This occurs when thunder and lightening appear without rain but during a snow storm.
