The Electric Company nightclub and bar on Varick Street in Utica is set to close on May 12.

The owners say the business has run its course and they don't plan to open up in another location.  An EC patron told the Utica Observer-Dispatch

“It became almost the Mecca for new music,” said 34-year-old Jay Sumner, who began frequenting the bar 10 years ago in search for local live music. “It inspired people to seek out live music, to listen to new music, new bands formed; this place made you want to love your home.”

Will the closing of the Electric Company hurt the Varick Street scene?
