Following this week's historic lake effect snowfall in Buffalo, the NFL announced that Ralph Wilson Stadium would not be able to host Sunday's Jets-Bills game. The game will be played Monday night in Detroit. That's too bad, because there were plenty of great choices for alternate locations in New York State.

This isn't a slam against Detroit or Ford Field. They'll be great hosts, as they were when the Vikings played a home game there following the roof collapse of the Metrodome. But couldn't the NFL have considered any locations in New York State to host the game?

Carrier Dome - Syracuse

This is the obvious choice and Syracuse.com reports that the Bills even made a preliminary iniquity into using the Dome. There is so much here that makes sense. The Dome is the home to major NCAA sporting events and is centrally located in New York. It would have made a memorable Monday Night Football game. But the NFL claimed a non-league stadium could not have been able to handle all that would be needed to produce the game.

UB Stadium - Buffalo

The one thing to remember about the lake effect snow event is that the part of the Buffalo metropolitan area that got buried in snow was the suburbs known as the Southtowns, including Orchard Park which is the home of the Bills stadium. The collegiate UB Bulls, on the other hand, play at a stadium on the north side of town that was greatly spared the brunt of the snowfall.

Red Field - SUNY Cortland

Cortland is the training camp home of the Jets, so certainly the field is up for at least NFL level scrimmages. Like Syracuse, Cortland would provide a central location in the state, so don't count on a Jet's home-field advantage. Plus the stadium is used to big games - the best college rivalry in America, Cortaca, is played there.

Alumni Stadium - Binghamton

Wait, play an NFL game at a high school stadium? Why not, the league does it every year. The annual Hall of Fame game in Canton is played at Fawcett Stadium, a field owned by the Canton School District which since 1924 has been the home of the McKinnley High School Bulldogs.

Charles A. Gaetano Stadium - Utica

Okay I don't really expect the NFL to seriously consider playing at Utica College's home field. But it is fun to daydream about a pro football game being played in our backyard.
