With text messaging, Snapchat, Facebook messenger... we hardly ever use our phones to make phone calls anymore. It's becoming a dying act. Think about it... When was the last time you actually called someone?

We live in a world that is so connected, but we're so distant. Sure, we can still get the latest news from friends and family in text messages, but it's lacking... something.

It is a world of short answers- short responses, short stories, everything is short and missing an important element of communication. It's missing emotion. You can send a smiley face and show you're happy in a text message, but you can't hear that smile (you know what I mean, when someone's voice changes a little when they're talking, because they're smiling at the same time).

Since moving out here to Central New York, I've learned the value of a phone call. There's something completely different with picking up a phone and actually making a phone call, compared to sending a friendly text.

There's something special about emotionally connecting with someone, that I feel we are bound to lose if all we do is send messages. And I think the last thing this world needs to lose is the ability to emotional connect with others.

So I'm offering you this challenge - pick up the phone and call someone. If your parents are still around, call them. If your children have moved out, call them. See what's new in their life and how things are going. Have a real conversation. Not only will it make a difference in their life, it will make a difference in your life, as well.
