U.S. News & World Report considers colleges based on a variety of factors, including tuition costs, average salary of graduates and geographical location.

The report is divided into two major categories: universities and liberal arts colleges, and also considers regional colleges divided into regions. Central New York is included in the North region. Regional schools offer a full range of undergraduate programs and some master's programs but few doctoral programs. This ranking is divided into North, South, West and Midwest schools.

SUNY Polytechnic Institute came out near the top in a number of categories. 

Out of 196 Regional Colleges - North, SUNY Poly is ranked the 15th best, based on a variety of factors, and ranked 39th in terms of best value for educational dollars invested. Providence College in Rhode Island was ranked #1.

SUNY Poly is the top local college for in it's category as a Best College for Veterans, tying for #6 with Manhattanville College. 

According to US News & World Report, SUNY Poly received that ranking based on the school's "participation in federal initiatives that help veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees."
