Last year was a great year for video games, and especially Ubisoft. The company experienced continued success with its best-selling games, like Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell, both of which were also announced to receive the big screen treatment. Fortunately for fans of the video game movie genre, Ubisoft has big plans for this venture into film, recently announcing the next big gaming sensation to eventually hit the theaters -- Ghost Recon.

As you might recall, Ridley Scott produced a visually stunning, 20-minute short for 'Ghost Recon: Alpha.' So if you ask us, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got the hint and made this top-selling game into a movie. In an interview with the LA Times, Chief Executive of Ubisoft Motion Pictures Jean-Julien Baronnet revealed that plans to set a 'Ghost Recon' film into motion have already begun as a pitch is currently being developed.

The Tom Clancy series is one of Ubisoft's best-selling games and centers around an elusive military tactical unit that execute tasks so highly classified that the soldiers are referred to as "the Ghosts." Fans of the game needn't worry too much at this point regarding how it will exactly be translated to the big screen as Baronnet has made it pretty clear that one of the company's primary goals is making video game movies worthy of their fan base.

If you look at past adaptations of games to movies, none were done by an integrated gaming company that put a movie structure inside of itself. We’re not here to just license and we’re not here to produce big movies ourselves. We are really in the middle of it. ... With so much at stake, it’s important we don’t give up the DNA of the game, the fundamental pillars.

As far as 'Assassin's Creed' (starring Michael Fassbender) and 'Splinter Cell' (starring Tom Hardy) are concerned, Ubisoft is also keen on creating more than just your "average movie." He said, "We want to make a movie that will serve the brand and make happy the gamers and also the non-gamers. I think it has never been done before, but we can build this bridge," which gives us high hopes for what 'Ghost Recon' will bring.

What do you think of the news? Are you happy to hear of a 'Ghost Recon' movie being planned? Whom would you like to star as the lead? Which game in particular should be tackled first? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
