Genetic Power Is Unleashed In the Final ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ Trailer

Up until now, it looked like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was about Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard saving dinos from extinction (again) as a volcano wreaked havoc on Isla Nublar. At least, that’s what the synopsis and previous trailers wanted us to believe. But the film’s final trailer arrived today, revealing entirely new plot points: that was mainly a distraction, and this movie is really about a black market for dinos.

Four years after the events of Jurassic World, Pratt’s Owen and Howard’s Claire are brought back to the dinosaur island to rescue them from a sea of lava. Only that was all a trick by some new corporate big bad played by Rafe Spall, who steals beloved raptor Blue, and plans to weaponize and monetize the trained predator for the highest bidders. Hence, the dinos of the theme park are unleashed into the real world.

Director J.A. Bayona told Entertainment Weekly in their new cover story that Fallen Kingdom will have a tonal twist half-way through. The sequel has pretty much been split into two kinds of movies, as the trailer teases. Bayona explained:

The first half, you have a whole dinosaur movie on the island, so you have what you expect from a Jurassic movie. Then the second half moves to a totally different environment that feels more suspenseful, darker, claustrophobic, and even has this kind of gothic element, which I love.

Welp, I certainly didn’t expect that. Given The Orphanage director’s horror proclivities, I am intrigued to see him ratchet up the fear factor with some dinos. But splitting a movie so extremely is a cause for concern – will these two tones cohesively fit into one whole, or will it look like part-less-good-Jurassic-Park, part-random-dino-horror? We’ll find out when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom arrives June 22.
