Kelly Osbourne Says Lady Gaga’s Jo Calderone Rips Off Annie Lennox
When Lady Gaga opened the MTV VMAs as her male alter ego Jo Calderone on Sunday, she triggered yet another wave of the obsessive buzz that has surrounded her reign as one of pop’s biggest-selling stars, with pundits across the media spectrum weighing in on how her performance went and what it all meant.
One person who wasn’t impressed, however, was Kelly Osbourne. In fact, she thinks Lady Gaga ripped off her whole Calderone persona from Annie Lennox.
Telling her Twitter followers “i love lady gaga but i wish she would start giving credit where credit is due!,” Osbourne wrote “example… 1984 PEOPLE!” and tweeted a link to Lennox’s performance with the Eurythmics at the 1984 Grammys.
Lennox’s early years as a pop star were heavily androgynous, from the brightly colored, close-cropped hair she sported for several years to the masculine imagery the Eurythmics played with for albums like 1983′s ‘Touch.’ And watching Lennox perform ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)’ at the Grammys, it isn’t hard to see what Osbourne saw — a direct antecedent of Gaga’s Jo Calderone.
This isn’t the first time Lady Gaga has been accused of lifting another artist’s work — Bette Midler recently blasted Gaga for stealing her “mermaid in a wheelchair” bit — but Osbourne later made it clear that her criticism was affectionate, tweeting, “I love @LadyGaga. She puts bravery back into fashion!”
