Colin Firth is normally the last actor you’d imagine playing a suave and deadly secret agent in the James Bond mold, but he looks right at home in the trailer for ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service‘ (formally known just as ‘The Secret Service’). The Oscar-winning actor appears to be brilliantly cast against type in the Matthew Vaughn film, which sees a veteran super-spy taking a young delinquent under his wing and training him to be England’s next great secret defender.
Based on the comic series by writer Mark Millar and artist Dave Gibbons, ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ appears to ditch everything but the basic concept and looks all the better for it. The original comic was never quite as good as its basic pitch and it looks like director Matthew Vaughn is using its skeleton as a chance to craft his take on the ultimate British spy movie, combining everything from James Bond to the original ‘Avengers’ TV series into one crazy world. This represents an interesting collision of Vaughn’s specialties as a filmmaker — this definitely feels like the halfway point between ‘Layer Cake’ and ‘X-Men: First Class.’
The trailer itself is slick and fun, playing with all kinds of spy tropes and making it clear that Firth should have tried this who action hero thing ages ago. Add in Samuel L. Jackson as a bad guy with a truly weird voice and you’ve got a movie that really has our attention.
‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ arrives in theaters on October 24, 2014.
