Lorde covers the May 2014 issue of Teen Vogue, wrapped in red and looking unconventionally beautiful. In the behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, the singer talks why BFFing with Taylor Swift works and how she hopes she inspires young girls.

The cover shoot took place in Austin, Texas, and she admitted she has family members in the area and that they are in a band, to boot.

Lorde also covers the music issue, and she was psyched for that recognition. But even more so, the 'Royals' singer wanted to do a magazine for her peers. "It's kind of an honor," she said.

She also spoke about her connecting with other artists. "It's always good befriending people who do a similar thing," she said, referencing her oft-discussed relationship with Swift. "A lot of people I've met since I have had this success have an agenda and want something from me."

However, she can bond with fellow artists, since, they "get" it. She said, "If we have the same work problem, we know each other's lives a little bit, so it's okay."

The most poignant thing the singer said, though, was her hope that she can inspire young girls to achieve their dreams.

"My success teaches young girls that they can do it regardless of age or sex and you don't have to look a certain way or be a certain way," Lorde, who is just 17, said. "In this day and age, the prescribed ideals of 'This is what a girl should be' are over." She also wants people to be inspired by her real-ness.

The mag was true to her personal style with the shoot and the art direction, representing masculine and Japanese styles, which Lorde. definitely pulls from.
