Rob Thomas has helped bring some ubiquitous, monster hits into the world — if you're a human being who's eaten at a Chili's in the continental U.S., you've heard "3 A.M." and his Santana collaboration "Smooth" at least eight dozen times. It may surprise the casual Matchbox Twenty fan to know that Rob hasn't released a solo album since 2009, but his true-blue admirers heard their new favorite song today: The bouncy "Trust You" from the upcoming full-length The Great Unknown.

"Trust You" was co-written with OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder (Demi Lovato's "Neon Lights," One Direction's "Right Now" and Beyonce's "Halo" are a few of the MANY Tedder-penned songs you likely know and love), and Thomas tells Entertainment Weekly that it was inspired by the "Wooo-ooo-ooo-woo"s in the Rolling Stones' "Miss You." The 1978 classic's influence is discernible, though it sounds closer to like Blur's unlikely sports anthem, "Song 2."

As for the song's meaning, Rob says it's about your one wildcard friend who'll invite you out for a night full of delightfully bad, blackout-inducing ideas (quote via EW): "one person who has all this power over them—everybody has that friend. So this is about that one friend that you have, that no matter how steady you think you are in life, when they call you you’re going to say yes and things are going to go horribly wrong in a really fun way."

"Trust You" doesn't break new sonic ground, but it's easy to imagine it soundtracking movie trailers and TV montages, and given Thomas and Tedder's collective talent for crafting earworms, the track may get frequent play this summer.

You can listen to "Trust You" now over at Entertainment Weekly, and let us know if you think Rob has another hit on his hands.
