As of now, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation operated campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains are open for the season.  The 52 DEC areas are open through Labor Day, with some staying open through the fall foliage season.

According to dec.ny.gov, in addition to hiking and fishing, the campgrounds offer many outdoor activities suited for the entire family.  Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The prices range from $18 to $28 per night.

The DEC also advises campers that they are not to bring firewood into campgrounds.  For a list of campsites as well as gift cards and other information, click the camping link on the DEC website.
