Do you have a Google alert set for "Top Gun 2"? Do you spend your days swaying to Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" on repeat, daydreaming about Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis as you light more votive candles for Goose? If not, we've got some news that may surprise you: a Top Gun sequel is coming, and Tom Cruise will appear.

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Skydance CEO David Ellison told Collider. By "Maverick" Ellison means Tom Cruise, who originated the role in the 1986 film. Cruise's character has presumably experienced a lot since he was a rebellious young pilot 30 years ago, and the military's approach to combat has changed as well — a change that Ellison plans to address in the movie.

Ellison feels that the advent of drone technology should be integral to the plot (and the fact that a lot of drones look really cool can't hurt, either): "It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce." He continued, "So it’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we’re gonna get to dive into in this movie."

The film will take place in present-day and Ellison wants it to be in 3D and IMAX, for maximum bombast. Screenwriter Justin Marks is tasked with the script, and according to IMDB he previously wrote Street Fighter II: The Legend of Chun-Li (undoubtably made for the many people who've wondered, "What is Chun-Li's full back story, and how does she kick so good?").

The as-yet-untitled Top Gun sequel has no official production info yet, but Ellison says "we are very, very hopeful that we get to make the movie very soon." Will you be buying a ticket when they do?
