What is the US Government Monitoring on Commercial Drive?

Perhaps you noticed that a new structure has been erected on Commercial Drive near Greenman Avenue in New York Mills. What is it and what is it monitoring?

The structure is a US Geologic Survey stream monitoring site. A program called the National Streamflow Information Program and the site on Commercial Drive is likely monitoring Sauquoit Creek which has a history of flooding lots on the north/west side of Commercial Drive like the Joe Tehans lot and the car dealerships.
