There's good news and bad news for the Central New York region when it comes to launching a new business. The city of Utica ranks 541st in that department. That's not necessarily BAD, when you consider 1,261 towns were rated in this latest survey. And the news is worse for some other CNY communities.

WalletHub has published a list of The Best & Worst Small Cities to Start a Business. Factors such as labor costs, affordable office space, and fertile workforce (high percentage of educated residents with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree) were taken into account to come up with the final rankings.

Among small towns in Central New York, Utica was inside the top half and ranked quite a bit better than others:

  • 541. Utica
  • 664. Binghamton
  • 736. Rome
  • 845. Elmira

The good end of the spectrum featured the Rochester-area suburbs of Brighton (16th) and Irondequoit (51st), which both scored near the top of the list. Where would YOU want to start a new business?
