Did you happen to catch the story on The Today Show last Thursday featuring the Oregon mom who hasn't bought anything new for five years?  That caught my attention.  How could you go five years without buying anything new?  Turns out she has a few exceptions.

Her name is Katy Wolk-Stanley and her mantra is "Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without."   For five years, she hasn't been anything new.  Well, almost anything.  So what are her exceptions to the nothing new rule?  She does purchase new personal care items, underwear, bras, socks and food.   When asked what the typical  reaction people have when they find out she doesn't buy new stuff, Stanely told NBC most people think it sounds like a good idea but don't believe they could ever do it.  She  says it is able to be done and she's been able to do it for five years.  Stanley also found that by reducing the clutter in her home, this working mom is spending less time doing housework and spending that free time with friends and family.  Could you go one year, let alone five, without buying new stuff?  Sorry Katy, I think I'd miss shopping for new clothes too much!
