We faced the roadblocks this weekend pictured above while trying to get home via Genesee Street. Motorists traveling through New Hartford, Utica, Whitesboro, Clinton and other Mohawk Valley communities will be similarly affected by overpass work being done on Route 8.

The New York State Department of Transportation has issued a travel advisory for the village of New Hartford. Travel on Genesee Street and on a section of Route 8 between Campion Road and Brookline Drive, will be closed to traffic until Tuesday, August 21. DOT officials say the closure is to allow for installation of the new bridge deck, the components of which have been stored temporarily on the outer perimeters of the parking lot in the New Hartford Shopping Center.

The State Route 5/8/12 off-ramp to State Route 8 south will also be closed to traffic. Signs are in place in to let drivers know about the closure and to direct them to the appropriate detour routes.

The bridge and that section of Genesee Street were initially expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday, August 21st, but due to inclement weather, the closure will be in effect until Wednesday. Drivers should be aware that fines would be doubled for speeding through this (or any) work zone.
