The dog who was was found tied to a log in the Erie Canal - who rescuers named 'River' - is now available for adoption.

River was found abandoned and tied to a log along the Erie Canal in Rome on July 30. After an investigation, two arrests were made in the case: 23-year-old Trevor Drake of Rome and 23-year-old Kyle Webb of Boonville. Both men are charged with misdemeanor abandonment of an animal.

According to Dee Schaefer, Humane Educator for the SPCA, the owner of River didn't want her anymore:

"Allegedly, the owner of the dog who lives in Rome, didn't want the her (River) anymore and then paid someone from Boonville to get rid of her in a remote location."

(The interview with Dee Schaefer was conducted by Cindy McMullen, from our sister station, 96.1 The Eagle.)

River has been eating well and has passed the mandatory temperament testing. She will be spayed, and then will be available for adoption through the Syracuse SPCA. Do you think you could give River a forever home?
