Kids at a Utah Elementary School received quite a shock this week during lunch, when school officials tossed their lunches in the garbage.  The reason?  Their parents hadn't paid the school, so the kids had negative balances for their lunch accounts.

According to CNN, dozens of children had their lunch trays taken away by school officials and instead of being given their regular lunch, the school gave them milk and fruit.

The Salt Lake City School District said they started notifying parents on Monday about negative account balances.  The lunches were taken away Tuesday.

Parents were outraged, kids were upset and school officials now admit they made a mistake and should've handled the situation better.

We understand the feelings of upset parents and students who say this was an embarrassing and humiliating situation.  We again apologize and commit to working with parents in rectifying this situation and to ensuring students are never treated in this manner again.

How embarrassed those kids must have felt and you have to wonder how many of them are worrying about it happening again.  While I'm glad the school admits they were wrong, it's too bad such a bad decision was made in the first place.

What do you think?  If you were a parent of a child at that school, what would you do?
