Keep Kids Reading All Summer With New York’s Free Reading Program

School may be out for the summer, but that doesn't mean the reading should stop.

The New York State Senate's 2026 Summer Reading Program is now underway, giving children across New York a fun way to keep turning pages while school is on break.

This year's theme, "Unearth A Story," encourages kids of all ages to discover new adventures through books while helping them build strong reading habits over the summer.

Why Join the Summer Reading Program?

Reading during the summer can help prevent the "summer slide," when students lose some of the skills they gained during the school year. It also gives kids a chance to explore topics they love, use their imaginations and keep learning in a fun, pressure-free way.

Best of all, the program is completely free.

Sen. Joseph Griffo Encourages Kids to Keep Reading

State Sen. Joseph Griffo is encouraging children and families across the 53rd Senate District to take advantage of the free summer reading program.

Griffo said he hopes the program inspires more children to become active readers while school is out.

He also encouraged families to spend time at their local library, noting that New York's public libraries offer books, educational programs and valuable resources for children, families and the community year-round.

How the Program Works

Parents or guardians can register their child online and keep track of the books they read throughout the summer. Homeschooled students are also welcome to participate and should include their home school district when signing up.

Completed reading forms must be submitted by August 21, 2026.

Children who finish the program will receive an official New York State Senate Summer Reading Certificate recognizing their hard work and dedication. Register here.
