With her debut LP 'Badlands' on the way at the end of the month (August 28), Halsey stopped into PopCrush to tell us a little bit more about herself, her debut single (“Ghost”) and EP ('Room 93'), her upcoming full-length, her thoughts about being a female artist, touring, fans and everything in between.

Yesterday, we got to know 20-year-old singer-songwriter Halsey a little bit better by hearing her explain the meaning behind her stage name (it's an anagram!), as well as the story behind her runaway hit, "Ghost."

And now, she's taking us deeper into her creative process.

Earlier this year, the singer released her debut EP Room 93, a moody collection of alt-pop tunes. "For me, it was kind of just indulging in my obsession with the intimacy of hotel rooms," she explains. As she began traveling and meeting with record labels, Halsey was inspired by the striking "surrealistic environment" of a hotel room. "The Room 93 EP was just kind of picking apart the sense of voyeurism and the sense of isolation and turning it into, essentially, a little black book and reflecting on — at that time — 19 years of me forming relationships with people."

It's a concept she plans to expound upon on her upcoming full-length record, Badlands.

"It's definitely a new adventure for me," she told us. "I found myself writing about things that were a little bit more recent, which was a new experience for me...tapping into things that just happened was kinda anxious, kinda therapeutic and kinda self-actualizing."

The album is a musical journey, she says, as she escapes the metaphorical Badlands (a fictional society), moving from urban and trap-influenced tracks into more dreamy, ethereal material until the album morphs into what is "essentially a pop dreamland." Sounds exciting!
