Central New York Swimming Spot Closed
If you were planning a dip at Delta Lake State Park, you’re going to have to hold off.
Harmful algal blooms have forced officials to temporarily close the popular swimming area in Central New York.
What’s Going On in the Water
These blooms aren’t just ugly patches in the water — they can produce toxins that may be harmful to people and pets.
Health officials warn exposure can lead to skin irritation, stomach issues, or even breathing problems in some cases.
Out of an abundance of caution, the beach has been shut down until water conditions improve and the bloom clears up.
Why Officials Are Taking No Chances
It doesn’t take much for these algae blooms to become a concern, especially in warm weather when water use is high.
Once they show up, officials monitor conditions closely and shut things down quickly if there’s any risk.

What You Should Do
If you’re near any body of water this summer, officials are urging people to stay alert and follow basic safety steps:
- Stay out of the water if you see green scum or algae
- Avoid swimming, wading, fishing, or boating in affected areas
- Don’t drink untreated water
- Keep kids and pets away from suspicious water
- Rinse off with clean water if you accidentally come in contact
Stay Updated Before You Head Out
Conditions can change quickly, so visitors are encouraged to check the DEC’s Harmful Algal Bloom Notifications page before heading to any swimming area this summer.
