Jamaican Lottery Scam Run By Schenectady Couple
Just down the thruway in Schenectady, one couple just admitted to running a Jamaican-based lottery scam targeting mainly elderly victims all over New York and the United States.
According to WNBF, 37 year old Kimberly Powell and 25 year old Jeragh Powell both pleaded guilty to mail fraud. Federal Prosecutors say the pair received over $67,000 from the victims.
So how did the scam actually work? The couple would tell victims they won a lottery prize but had to pay tens of thousands of dollars in taxes and fees or shipping and handling. Each faces up to 20 years in prison.
