Beginning in March of 2017, Central New York will have two area codes.  After many years of discussion, a second area code will be added to our existing 315.  At that time, telephone companies will begin giving out numbers with the area 680.  Those numbers will be used in the same 18 counties as our current area code.

With the addition of the new area code comes one big change.  Effective February 11th, we will have to dial 10 digits instead of the current 7 for local calls.  Each call placed will need the area code plus the 7-digit number.

According to Syracuse.com, the new 680 area code will not go into effect until March 11th, but the dialing change will happen one month earlier.
