New Hartford Mom Warns Others After Someone Tried to Enter Home

A New Hartford mom is warning others to be sure to keep things locked up, after she says someone tried to get into her house when she was home.

Megan shared her warning on Facebook after the scary incident. "They made two attempts. Luckily, I have a security system and as soon as they tried to open the door they soon found out this is not the house they want to try."

Megan says the New Hartford Police Department responded, and cautioned her to be sure doors and cars are locked. "They did say there has been a lot of kids causing trouble. Ding dong ditch, as well as egging houses. A house on my road was egged this weekend."

Megan says hers wasn't the only house affected. "I was just talking to a neighbor. His house was egged this weekend and so were two other houses. His screen window was also sliced open."

You can help prevent break-ins in your home by taking these steps, even if you're home:

1. Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. Even if it is for a short time, lock your doors.
2. Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going to be away for a length of time, connect some lamps to automatic timers to turn them on in the evening and off during the day.
3. Keep your garage door closed and locked.

Keep your own vehicle safe by following some simple steps:

1. Always lock your doors, even if your vehicle is parked in your own driveway.
2. Never leave anything of value in plain sight in your car. The best choice is to bring anything valuable into your home. If that's not possible, lock the items in the trunk of your vehicle or place them well out of sight.
3. If possible, park your car in a well-lit area. Leave driveway lights on.
