The Winter Olympics could be making a return to New York.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state is forming an Exploratory Committee to study whether New York should pursue a bid to host the 2042 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The committee will spend the next year looking at whether a unique partnership between Lake Placid and New York City could work financially and logistically. Officials say this is not an official Olympic bid yet. Instead, it's a chance to study costs, infrastructure and community support before making any decisions.

Several subcommittees will focus on finances, legal issues, operations and public engagement. At the end of the one-year process, the group will submit recommendations on whether the state should move forward with an official bid.

Lake Placid's Olympic History Could Play a Major Role

Lake Placid is no stranger to the Olympics. The Adirondack village hosted the Winter Games in 1932 and again in 1980, when the famous "Miracle on Ice" U.S. hockey team won gold.

New York has already invested about $750 million into upgrading Olympic facilities in Lake Placid. Those venues have become world-class training sites and are set to serve as backup locations for bobsled, skeleton and luge events during the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.

If New York eventually moves forward with a bid and is selected, it would mark the third time Lake Placid has hosted the Winter Olympics and the first Winter Games held in New York since 1980.
