NY State DMV Scam Alert! Get This Text? Delete Immediately!
How many times a week does your phone ring and the ID says SPAM Risk or Potential SPAM? Those are easy to decline and move on from but what about the ones that look genuine? A phone call, text, email and even your social media accounts an get avenues that bag guys use to try to scam you.
The latest scam reported involves your New York State drivers license. If you get this text DO NOT RESPOND.
According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, as of May 3, 2023 you will need the Enhanced or REAL ID if you plan to fly within the United States, for example. With this new policy comes some confusion and that is when the scammers prey on you. They hope the confusion will cause you to fall for their tricks and offer your personal information.
New York State DMV is warning residents against fake text messages! If you received a text asking, Are you REALID Ready?", it did NOT come from them. The text goes on to ask you to "Please fill the form below to comply with REALID". Again, this text did NOT come from NYS DMV.
The scammers are hoping that you will open the text, click the link and start offering your personal information. Do not open the text. Do not click the link and certainly do not give them your address, birthdate or social security number! Next thing you know your identity will have been stolen right out of your hands.
