Saying that Roosevelt School was becoming unsafe and structurally unsound, the city of Utica fast-tracked the process of bringing the former elementary school down.

Roosevelt School was located on Taylor Ave in the city's Cornhill neighborhood and closed in 1992. Recently, the school was the inspiration for a Hamilton College creative writing project.

Utica Mayor Rob Palmieri said today via his Facebook page:

“My Administration has closely monitored this situation since a portion of Roosevelt’s roof collapsed in mid-September,” Mayor Palmieri said. “We cannot turn a blind eye on this issue, and after careful deliberation, it is essential we take pro-active measures to ensure the safety of our residents.”
