On a campus visit recently with one of our kids, we had a great experience at one of the dining halls at SUNY Potsdam. Different food stations specializing in stir-fry or omelettes or burgers were among the many choices. We were blown away, compared to the food recollections of our own college days.

After our lunch at Potsdam, it was hard to imagine any colleges offering better food choices. And, even though Potsdam did rank #10 among the schools with The Best College Food in New York, there were others close to the Mohawk Valley that ranked higher, according to Niche.com.

The folks at Niche say their food rankings are "based on meal plan costs and student reviews. Top-ranked colleges offer outstanding on-campus dining—students can easily access healthy, quality food across a wide range of cuisines and dietary preferences."

Here are the top-ranked colleges near Central New York in the food department:

  • #2. Cornell University in Ithaca.
  • #3. St. John Fisher in Rochester.
  • #4. Skidmore in Saratoga Springs.
  • #10. SUNY Potsdam in Potsdam.

No surprise at #1: downstate's Culinary Institute of America. To see where other New York state colleges rank, here's the entire list on Niche.com.
