In an interview that's gone viral, 'The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening has revealed that Springfield, Oregon, was the inspiration for the fictional town the yellow cartoon characters inhabit.

One of the longest running gags of 'The Simpsons' was the use of the very common town name of 'Springfield' without ever stating which state the series was based in.  Springfields from Massachusetts to Illinois were sure it was their Springfield.

I don't think that the residents of the small Otsego County of Springfield ever made that confusion.  Springfield, New York, is located just south of the Herkimer County.  The tiny town of Springfield (population 1358) is best known as the home of Glimmerglass State Park.  The town is located on US Route 20 and NY Route 80.
