Having lived within minutes of beautiful Cape Cod in Massachusetts, I can say that here in Upstate New York, we have an area that can easily compete as a spectacular vacation destination.  It's the Thousand Islands area, and it's only about a two-hour drive from the Mohawk Valley.

The Thousand Islands are actually a group of over 1800 islands in the St. Lawrence River flowing between New York and Canada.   Back in the 1900's, the region was a summer resort for some of the richest citizens of the Northeast and even the Midwest.  Some of their castles and mansions remain, including the incredible Boldt Castle on Heart Island.

You'll also find hundreds of miles of picturesque coastline, blue bays and historic lighthouses.  Fishing, boating and scuba diving are the most common summertime activities in the Thousand Islands.  And, did I mention that they are only about a two-hour drive from Central New York?
