We applaud all the businesses that allowing their employees the time to celebrate Easter with their friends and family in Central New York.

Easter shoppers should plan ahead and make sure they don't need any last-minute items as many stores will be closed on Easter Sunday. Retail Me Not tells us many grocery stores, pharmacies and large retailers are giving their employees a much-needed (and well-deserved) day off on April 4 for Easter.

Easter Sunday generally falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. The first day of spring was on Saturday, March 20. The first full moon, the Worm Moon, was on Sunday,  March 28, making Easter Sunday, April 4.

According to Earthsky.org, the Council of Nicaea, the first ecumenical council of the Christian church, established the date of Easter when it met in Turkey in the year 325 A.D. By ecclesiastical rules set centuries ago, there are 35 dates on which Easter can take place. The earliest possible date for Easter is March 22 and the latest possible date is April 25.
