It Could Always Be Worse: Thanksgiving Horror Stories
Worried about your Thanksgiving celebration? Just remember, even if everything doesn't go according to plan, it could always be worse. Like these stories...
Thanksgiving is a stressful time, there's no doubt about that. Whether you're a little worried about cooking the turkey because it's the first Thanksgiving dinner being held at your home, or you know some of your family members don't get along with each other (and they have to try and be civilized for a few hours), there's always something that can cause some "issues." Even if everything seems perfect, you never know when that oven is just going to stop working or if someone is going to have a little too much before-dinner-wine, and say something they shouldn't.
Hey, life happens. The only thing you can do when it's all said and done, is to try and laugh it off. Sometimes that takes until the following Thanksgiving, sometimes even longer. If you're worried, check out some of these Thanksgiving horror stories and remember, maybe it's not so bad after all.
Filming the Family on Thanksgiving
Kyle shared a story about his ex-girlfriend's dad setting up a camera to film during Thanksgiving. Apparently the whole family got into a political argument and many family members stormed out. He says, "I don't think he kept the video."
I'm hoping he didn't. Awkward.
Carrying Anything on Thanksgiving is a Dangerous Task
This story comes from one of my good friends, Brandy. She wrote in,
I fell down a flight of stairs while carrying a pile of pies. Ended up wearing the pies and slammed my arm on a shelf as I went down....hilarious now, not so much then!
Luckily they didn't have to take Brandy to the hospital. That's no way to spend Thanksgiving. Covered in pie isn't either, but sometimes things happen.
There's Always at Least One Fire Story
But it wasn't deep-frying a turkey. Rachael shares her Thanksgiving horror story when her and her mother started an oven fire after trying to reload the turkey back into the oven (after checking on it). She said they had to spend the next 90 minutes taking apart and cleaning the oven. Luckily, dinner was still served. It was a little late, and apparently had a "smokey" flavor to it.
You Can't Control Everything on Thanksgiving
Joe told us about a time he was 12-years-old, or so. While his family was saying Grace, he farted. They still won't let him live that down.
This Dinner Took Forever
Sometimes cooking should be left to the professionals, or at least someone who has experience cooking that turkey. Jack wrote to us saying his sister (who was a teenager at the time) cooked their Thanksgiving dinner. Unfortunately, the oven was only at 150-degrees, so it took about 10 hours to cook.
Did they really leave the turkey in the oven for 10 hours, though? I probably would have given up after the 6th or 7th hour.
Probably my favorite story we received. Derek Clark told us about a friend of his who forgot to take their 20-pound turkey out of the freezer. So what do you do? Well, she decided to throw it in the microwave to thaw it out. Let's just say, it was NOT a good idea.
Still waiting to find out if they decided to serve something else for Thanksgiving or if they just ate all the side dishes.
There Will Always Be Disagreements
One woman who wanted to remain anonymous (and we totally understand why) shares her horror story of a disagreement with her mother-in-law. She was cooking Thanksgiving dinner at her house when she says her mother-in-law kept meddling in everything, and criticized her for the way she was handling Thanksgiving dinner. They ended up getting into a huge argument and she forgot about all the food cooking in the kitchen. The argument lasted long enough, that most of the food was overcooked and the turkey dried out. Everyone just picked at their dinner, while her mother-in-law said "I told you so" for the rest of the night.
Yes, Thanksgiving can be stressful, it can be a mess, and it can drive anyone crazy. Luckily, it only comes around once a year. We hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving, and don't have to deal with anything as bad as these people did.
