This former tanning pit owner was fortunate enough to have ten Utica streets named after him. Do you have any named after you?  Rutger Bleecker was a prominent landowner in the 1700's . One of the plots of land he owned was home to a tanning pit. Is that where our ancestors used to go and get bronzed and sun kissed? No, according to NYSM.NYSD.Gov:

Tanners transformed animal skins or hides into leather. The tanner stood between hunters and butchers (the suppliers of skins) and leather workers who made commercial products from the tanned hides. . Merchants also owned tanning pits and then tanneries.
