The city of Rome will hold its Christmas tree lighting ceremony about two weeks earlier this year compared to recent years. Just announced, the lighting will take place on Wednesday, November 23rd. This is the day before Thanksgiving.

The annual event is centered around the lighting of the city’s tree in Veterans Memorial Park on the 200 block of North James Street. It also includes an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus, and ends with fireworks.

Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo told the Rome Daily Sentinel that she felt the date change will help the event and not hurt it.

"Actually that’s when it used to be. We want to take advantage of all the people in town to see family for Thanksgiving.”

More details on events will be released soon.
