5 of the Best Campgrounds in New York You Definitely Should Visit This Summer
Between all the state parks and campgrounds in New York, you definitely have plenty of options for camping. May we suggest these five fantastic places?
Picking a campground to spend a few days at or a weekend getaway can be tough. There are so many places to choose from and it's hard to decide which ones worth the trip or will fit your needs the best. Most of us will end up asking friends and family members hoping they can help make the decision easier (which, sometimes helps, but other times can just add EVEN more options to your list). Here's some of the best campsites and campgrounds throughout our state that we think you should visit, at least once:
1 - Fish Creek Pond: 4523 State Route 30, Saranac Lake
This beautiful campground in the Adirondacks has water access from the majority of the campsites on the property. Wake up every morning looking out at Square Pond or Fish Creek Pond. There's a swimming area, picnic area, hiking trails, and even a basketball and volleyball area for the kids. Don't forget to listen for the "Yoo-Hoos" across the ponds at dusk. And the drive to Saranac Lake is definitely a beautiful one, which is a bonus.
2 - Letchworth State Park: 1 Letchworth State Park, Castile
Well-known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," this camping area is perfect for those who like to hike, explore, and go sight-seeing. Of course, you can just take a nice ride around the campground on your bike or in a car if you're not up for hiking the trails. Either way, to say this place is stunning is an understatement. You can camp in a tent, bring your RV, or stay in one of the cabins in the park.
3 - Moffitt Beach: 205 Page Street, Lake Pleasant
This campground is the perfect little getaway for the whole family. With many of the sites surrounds by tall, thin trees, you get that deep-woods camping feeling. But you won't be too far away from the sandy beach and a swimming area for the kids. Further out, you'll see boats and people fishing, and others tubing and enjoying other water activities. And this campground isn't too far away from the Rome/Utica area, compared to other campgrounds on the list. The shorter drive makes it great if you would like to get some camping in on the weekend, or just for a day or two.
4 - Keewaydin State Park: 46165 NYS Route 12, Alexandria Bay
Head towards the Thousand Islands Region to visit this charming state park. If you're big into fishing or being on the water, this is the place for you with clean, beautiful waterways. There are picnic areas, a swimming pool, and of course playgrounds for the kids. This campground offers sites for tent camping and sites for RV camping.
5 - Fair Haven Beach State Park: 14985 State Park Road, Sterling
Right on the shores on Lake Ontario, this campground has some of the best views of the water. And of course with Lake Ontario being one of the Great Lakes, it's almost like being on the ocean... Almost. There is a big area for swimming with beautiful sandy shores, and of course a huge area to get the boat out and take it for a ride on Lake Ontario. There is also a long "dock" you can walk out onto for even more great views of the water. This campground offers areas for tent camping, cottages and cabins, and RV camping. Also if you plan on going to the Sterling Renaissance Festival this summer, you'll be so close to all the fun, but will have a nice place to relax after the festivities at this state park.
Obviously, there are TONS of other state parks and campgrounds throughout our state, but each of these places offers something great and unique, we think that you should definitely give them a try. Visit some of them and let us know what you think - OR you can tell us if we missed a campground you think deserves to be on this list.
